Cal Poly Global Program - Engineering & Business in China

Studying in China offers you the chance to embrace a new culture and learn about a country with a history dating back thousands of years, whose economy has been growing dramatically these past two decades. Knowledge of China is increasingly desired by employers and provides you an edge in your resume. In addition to gaining such a study abroad experience, you are able to accelerate your academic degree progress by earning Cal Poly academic credits.

This Cal Poly faculty led global program is designed to offer Cal Poly students a multidisciplinary international team experience. International teams will be formed consisting of Cal Poly students and Chinese students from Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT) and you will take classes and conduct projects together with the intent of applying the knowledge they acquire to solve real-world problems. Through this experience, you will learn how to work in a team with different cultural backgrounds. You will gain problem-solving skills by conducting real world projects. You will also improve communication skills and develop leadership skills in a multi-cultural environment. It is expected that students will be ready to function in a global environment after this program.

Welcome to Hangzhou, China

Six days of cultural excursions in Hangzhou and Shanghai are part of the program. We will visit the Bund and the 100th floor of the Financial Center in Shanghai, and taste famous Nanxiang Steamed Bun (Baozi) at Yu Garden and have a nice buffet dinner at the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai. West Lake of Hangzhou, a United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site, is a must visit place. In addition, we will experience the beauty of Suzhou classical garden, ride a boat at the Xixi Wetland National Park, and taste spring water from the Tiger Spring.

This program is open to undergraduate students in all Engineering fields

Eligibility

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Not actively on academic probation
  • Good disciplinary standing

How to Apply

Before you apply to this program, please attend a Study Abroad 101 Workshop and complete the Advising Module. The online application will open on November 8, 2018. Click the 'Apply Now' button to get started. The application process will require approximately 30 minutes to complete. The deadline to apply is February 1, 2019 (11:59 PM). Applications will be reviewed after the February 1st deadline, and students will be notified of their application status by February 15. Back to top

Academics

The academic focus of this program is project-based engineering & business, which will be approached through a combination of coursework and company visits. This program is an excellent opportunity to develop a broader understanding of global issues. All courses are taught in English by Dr. Pan & Dr. Chen.

Jianbiao Pan

Faculty Leader: Dr. Jianbiao Pan is a professor in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. His teaching interests include statistical data analysis, design and analysis of experiment, quality engineering, reliability engineering, electronics manufacturing, and microelectronics packaging. He is an ASQ-Certified Quality Engineer and an ASQ-Certified Reliability Engineer.

Leida Chen

Faculty Leader: Dr. Leida Chen is Professor of Information Systems in Orfalea College of Business. His teaching interests include data management, data mining, business analytics, electronic commerce and mobile commerce, and strategic information systems.
